High School

Service Learning Program                                                                                                  3 Hours     Science GPS: SCSh1, SCSh2, SEV2, SEV3, SEV5, SB4                                                            Students learn about the importance of biodiversity and develop a feeling of ownership of Stone Mountain Park by working to restore a native plant garden. The program is designed to improve the environment and educate students and the public about invasive plants.

On the day of the field trip, students travel to the Nature Garden Trails in Stone Mountain Park.  Students learn about the forest ecosystem during a 45 minute forest hike. This knowledge is used to identify and remove invasive plants from a selected site, then replant the area with native plants. Finally, students place plant labels and mark their plants to alert Park visitors to the project’s purpose.

All tools and materials are provided. School must provide water, snacks and transportation to the Park.
