May
During May, the mountain and forests in the
park boasts many botanical delights. On the shaded forest floor the deep
red blooms of Indian Pink can be found if browsing deer do not reach it
first. The dazzling Sun Drops truly seem as if the Sun left beads of
yellow behind in the depression pites of the outcrop. The blooms of
Spiderwort, growing in the shallow granitic soils, can vary in color
from pale blue to pink or purple due to ease of hybridization. The
largest in the Blueberry family, Sparkleberry, can be found blooming
white in late Spring and has a uniquely colored bark. Butterfly weed a
species of Milkweed, the host plant of the Monarch Butterfly, can be
found flowering in fields and on the mountain. Be on the lookout for
these and others while out and about!
