July

Summer arrives and the mountain feels the effects. Through periods of drought and extreme heat, many plants wither and some succum to the harsh conditions. Other plants like Coreopsis and Day Flower will actually bloom during the high temperatures, the latter of which blossom's melt away each day. Pineweed, closely related to St. John's Wort, can be seen flowering yellow in outcrop pits and with a little deeper soil one can find the deciduous shrub Beauty Berry blooming. In wetter, shaded soils, along the water's edge Button Bush can be found providing nectar and seeds for browsing animals. On a hot July day, shade is valuled by even the hardiest of plants and people so find some shelter from the sun and enjoy.
