about education: 3rd-5th school programs
       
 

For the 2008-2009 school year our programs will be offered to school groups free of charge. The programs complement the Georgia science and social studies GPS and the North American Association for Environmental Education Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education. The GPS relevant to each program is linked below.  

Program descriptions are listed below and relevant Pre and Post-Trip Activities are available, linked below- right click and open each in a new window for clean printing.

Most programs begin at the Confederate Hall Education Center, located at the bottom of the Stone Mountain Walk-up Trail, but explore numerous locations throughout Stone Mountain Park. Private and public school buses are admitted to Stone Mountain Park for free! 

 

Information about other Stone Mountain Park field trip opportunities can be found at the Stone Mountain Park attractions site. For lunch and park souvenirs, please visit the attractions area at Memorial Hall and the Skylift! You can schedule group reservations for park attractions by calling Park Sales at 770-498-5636. We will be happy to work with you and help you to design and schedule a full day at the park, combining an outdoor field trip experience and a visit to one of the park attractions!

Third Grade


Stone Mountain Geology                                                                                                      1.5 Hours            Science GPS: S3CS1(a,c), S3E1(a,b,d)                                                                                            Students complete a short, interpretive hike on Stone Mountain to learn about the geology of igneous rocks.                                                                                                               Classroom Pre-Trip Activity

History of the Landscape:  Quarry                                                                                   1.5 Hours   Social Studies GPS: SS3E1(a,b,c,d), SS3E3(a,b,c)                                                                     Students explore our outdoor museum that tells the story of the quarrying industry at Stone Mountain.  They will learn about the historic, social and economic development in this area and briefly experience the life of a quarryman through hands-on activities. Fourth Grade

Exploring Wetlands                                                                                                                2 Hours Science GPS: S4CS8, S4L1, S4L2(a,b)                                                                                             Students learn about the special adaptations of the beaver, wetland ecosystem energy flow, population dynamics and food                                                                                          Classroom Pre-Trip Activity                                                                                                         Classroom Post-Trip Activity (Use lesson on page 3, rest of document is background information)

 

Mountain Meteorology                                                                                                         1.5 Hours   Science GPS: S4CS3(c), S4CS4(a,b,c), S4E4                                                                                 Students become Mountain Meteorologists and venture out to measure weather conditions on different areas of the mountain.  In the classroom students will use online weather stations located across the country to prepare a national weather map and forecast for the next day.                                                                                                                Classroom Pre-Trip Activity                                                                                                         Classroom Post-Trip Activity

Fifth Grade
